Hornworms go through four larval molts while going through five larval instars before to the two pupal molts. Throughout all these molts the hornworm not able to eat or walk.
You may notice pieces of exoskeleton (shed skin) stuck to their bodies. They should soon rub these off themselves, or you can gently rub them off with your fingers. They may leave a 'ring' of skin on the hornworm which will strangle its circulatory system and they will die.
