While we have only read journals about mealworms eating plastic as food, we have heard that when given a choice, they will choose a grain as food every time.
The plastic must be able to be torn and ingested by the mealworm's mouth parts; expanded or extruded polystyrene foams are the easiest to ingest and digest.
For shiny plastic bags, waxworm larvae have an enzyme in their mouthparts and gut that more readily breaks down polyethylene plastic bags.
