A mealworm's purpose as larvae is to eat to make fat stores. These fat stores will supply the larvae with energy to emerge as a beetle at the end of pupation (going into a cocoon) for several weeks.
Because of this, the larger a mealworm grows, the more fat content it will have stored in its innards. The larger your mealworm is in length and how well it's been fed and is hydrated, the longer it can last without food.
On average, a well-fed and hydrated mealworm can last at most 2 to 3 weeks without food or water if kept in optimal temperatures (65 to 75° F).
