How many mealworms per square foot? 3000 Mealworms

How many mealworms can live comfortably per square foot of space? Is there an upper limit, if they have enough food? What problems would arise if you house too many together?

You want about 20 square inches of surface area per thousand medium to large sized mealworms

You'll want to leave the lid off, and add bran/bedding to only 1.5" deep to allow moisture and heat to escape.

A 19 x 13 bin has roughly 247 square inches. You'll aim for 20 sq. in. for every thousand mealworms, so that container will hold 12 thousand max.

Remember to keep the bedding shallow, or it will get too moist at the bottom, causing bacteria and fungus to grow on their grain. We keep ours at 1.5" deep.
