When we see mealworms gathering at the corners we know it's time to change out their bedding and sift out their frass in the bottom because it's getting too warm for them.
We keep our bran very shallow (1.5" or less) and sift out castings often to keep heat from being trapped in the bedding.
What is the temperature in the room they're kept in? Is it over 80°?
Are they mainly in the corners or is it all four edges? The corners are the coolest spots so when heat is the issue, you'll see them there (think of the heat as an oval that's put inside a rectangle). If they're equally at all four walls then it very well may be the almond flavoring.
The main ingredient in almond flavoring is benzaldehyde, which is also used as an insecticide and antimicrobial chemical.
