It's so important that your turtle has a good diet; a turtle with a poor diet can have so many health issues!
It really depends on how old your painted turtle is; babies eat a more meat-based diet; adults eat more salad and meat.
No matter what age; it's important to keep their diet varied. Your veterinarian has suggested soft-bodied feeders which is what we recommend as well to prevent intestinal impaction.
Here are what we recommend:
Meat foods: small feeder fish (not goldfish or rosy red minnow); red earthworms, crickets, roaches, superworms, and a good quality turtle food like Mazuri.
Salad foods: Red-leaf lettuce, water lettuce, water lilies, kale, anacharis, escarole, and java moss
One thing to keep in mind, you don't want to feed foods high in fat too frequently. If you do it can lead to a vitamin E deficiency
