You can just mix in the whole culture, charcoal, water, and all into your terrarium. Each culture will seed up to a 29 gallon (18x18 inch tank). For larger enclosures just give them 4 to 5 weeks to proliferate and they will breed to the appropriate amount to create an ecosystem. We pack a full tablespoon of springtails into each culture. They are extremely small (1/6 to 1/5 inch long); a cat flea is 1.5mm, while a springtail is only 0.5mm a third of its size. With charcoal as a substrate, the springtails tend to float, but charcoal doesn't. Because of that, you can add more water to the culture so they float to the top and then pour them right into your vivarium if you don't want to add or mix in the charcoal.
With clay as a substrate, you can merely tap your culture on a hard surface (with the lid on) to tap them all onto the lid, then shake them into your enclosure. You can keep your population thriving in your vivarium by feeding them every few weeks with a very fine sprinkling of baker's yeast or some grains of rice. We also sell Repashy Morning Wood that they thrive on as well.
