The cultures will last for many, many months or longer, they will use the natural moisture in the rice flour as their water source.
You can sift out your beetles and larvae yearly (yes, yearly!) and replace the media.
If you would like to replace the media, we recommend using rice flour that is ground to 'Ultra-fine" and 1 part Brewer's yeast to every 9 parts flour. Whole wheat white flour (ultra-fine) works very well if it is available rather than rice flour. This formula is what we use:
