You will need roughly:
1/2 pound of bran for every 1000 medium/large Mealworms
Bran can become affected with grain mites very easily no matter where it is stored (even in your home). We purchase ours from a mill that supplies human bakeries so we know it is not only fresh but has been produced under the highest standards. We then store for 3 days it in aluminum silos so that it is sun-baked to ensure no mites can enter it until we either use it for our worm stock or package it for resale.
If you purchase your bran from a feed store it may very well already have grain mites, so it's important that it be baked for 20 minutes at 172-200 degrees Fahrenheit before use.
Store them in a location that isn't too hot or cold, right around 77 degrees is ideal. Keep the area free from any bug sprays.
Mealworms will need a source of moisture so a starchy vegetable that is meant to hold water for long periods of time like carrot or potato work best.
