We recommend using reverse osmosis water (RO) if and when possible because it removes almost all minerals from the water so your system won't get hard water mineral deposits in your system and enclosure.
One thing you should never use is distilled water. It has no dissolved salts so like you soaking in a bath where the water has less salt than your cells, it can cause the cells to swell. It also contains more hydrogen, often giving it an acidity of less than 7.0.
Tap water does have the wanted dissolved salts, but may also contain chlorine, chloramine, or fluoride.
When using tap water, leave it out overnight so the chlorine evaporates, and add a water conditioner like Reptisafe to remove chloramines and chlorine. Before using tap water, be sure your city/county doesn't add fluorine to it; it's been suspected that the addition of fluoride to water causes edema in chameleons.
