Buffalo beetles are cousins of the regular mealworm and have a very similar life cycle (egg, larvae, pupae, adult).
The adult female of the species lays on average 200 to 300 eggs but has the potential to lay several thousand. She lives up to a year laying eggs one to two times weekly as long as males are present and conditions are optimal.
The eggs hatch into larvae within a week and undergo eight to eleven larval instars before pupating. Their development time is dependent on temperature with an average of 50 days from egg to adult (can be 40 to 100 days).
The species is sexually dimorphic, meaning there are two sexes that are required for mating and reproduction.
