You can use oatmeal (not instant,) corn meal, masa, or wheat bran. We recommend using organic grain if you can to avoid all pesticides. Next to our bran, the very best top-of-the-line thing you can feed them is Bob's Red Mill wheat bran which is available in most grocery stores. You can find the closest location to you on their website: http://www.bobsredmill.com/dealer_loc...
We use wheat bran to feed our mealworms that we purchase from a grain mill that supplies bakeries. We pay a little more because we are so leery about pesticides or chemical entering our insect population. We sell the same bran we purchase on our website: http://www.rainbowmealworms.net/mealw... We recommend using carrots or potatoes instead due to the potential for molding.
Carrots are a nice starchy vegetable that are designed to hold moisture underground (as a root), so they make the perfect vegetable to provide a longer term water source for your mealworms. In hotter weather, they may need to be replaced more frequently as they'll dry out faster. If you have a large number of larger mealworms who drink more you'll also need to replace more frequently as well.
