Dermestid will not eat wood but if offered a large piece will burrow into the soft portion of the growth rings in order to pupate.
Wood shavings make great bedding for dermestid larvae. A few inches of bedding will help frass material build-up and insulate the colony.
You can also use egg cartons, styrofoam pieces, and shredded paper material.
