Chirping crickets can be unnerving to live with - especially if you have pet cats!
While Banded Crickets have a much softer chirp than other species, the males will develop short wings for calling the females and will begin louder chirping at the 6th instar. If you buy crickets younger than 3 weeks old you will be safe from loud male chirping. Warm temperatures are where crickets are the happiest. If you are able to turn up your air conditioning to keep it cold (74 or lower) it will make them lethargic and less likely to chirp. However, any lower than 65 will affect their longevity.
Crickets are nocturnal so to quiet them at night: trick them into thinking it is daytime by putting a bright light on or near their enclosure.
You can also cover them up during the day with a blanket, then putting a bright light on them at night to reverse their sleep/wake cycle.
