They are different genus and species.
Our Dermestid larvae colonies are a combination of _maculatus_, _ater_, and _lardarius_. Depending on the time of year, one of the three predominates our colonies.
Most of the year, without a lot of decaying material available, it is _lardarius_ that is the predominant species. For skull cleaning, we are recommending using [Buffalo Beetles](http://www.rainbowmealworms.net/buffa...) (_Alphitobius diaperinus_), which are MUCH more hardy and breed more readily than Dermestid beetles.
