Our mantis are L2 babies meaning their level of development.
When a mantis hatches from its ooth (egg) it is L1. After it sheds its exoskeleton for the first time it is L2. Every time it sheds, it progresses to the next level until it is an adult.
Each stage is called an instar; most mantis have 6 to 9 instars before reaching adulthood where it will never shed again.
