Thank you so much for your great questions!
We only use wheat bran as our bedding as we feel it's the best for not only our worm's health but also the animals that the worms feed. Insects also have very tiny holes called spiracles that they breathe through that cannot become clogged. Wheat bran makes the perfect bedding as it isn't as finely ground as flour which most definitely does clog their tubules.
What is most important is that you use a starchy vegetable like a carrot as the moisture source for your mealworms. Carrots are designed to hold moisture being a root, and will not give off water while they decompose like an apple, for example. Water in your bedding along with the heat from your worm's castings makes the perfect environment for molds, bacteria, and fungus to grow.
We find that our medium-sized mealworms are the best size for chickadees; other birds that will enjoy them are bluebirds, titmice, nuthatches, wrens, thrushes, and titmice, and of course robins.
