If the gel looks dried out (it will shrink vastly in size and cracked), or has any sign of mold then you will need to change it out.
For our isopods, we make it in batches and keep it in Rubbermaid containers in the fridge. We cut off cubes for them to replace the old one several times a week.
It stays fresher longer that way. Our isopods have grown and bred so well since we started using Morning Wood!
