It's likely that your bran is retaining moisture and it's the moisture that's causing the clumping. This is dangerous to your colony because the trapped moisture will also cause the heat to be trapped that is formed from the castings at the very bottom layer.
Keep your bran at 2" or less deep (we keep ours at 1.5") and when you add carrots to the top layer give the bran a swirl with your fingers to help break it up and you should be fine going forward.
