What kind of worms are best for desert tortoises, and how often do I feed them worms vs other things.

I have recently rescued some (9) desert box tortoises and I have an outdoor habitat for them. I am in a hot, dry climate and I worry about keeping them healthy with the correct food as well as keeping their habitat cool and humid. any advise would be greatly appreciated.

It may be a challenge, but to keep them cool you'll need to keep them indoors most likely!
Keep them at a depth of no more than 1 to 1.5" in their bedding to allow heat and moisture to escape, and always provide lots of fresh carrots so they have a water source.
