You can store mealworms in your fridge for long-term storage, about 6 to 8 weeks.
When kept with bran for food and carrots for water, Superworms will live 6 months to 2 years.
Here's how to care for the items in a Chicken Combo Pack:
Giant and Regular Mealworms:
- On arrival, shake worms out into a container (kitty litter pans or food storage bins work well)
Keeping at room temperature:
- Add a 1” layer of wheat bran or mealworm bedding
- Supply moisture with raw carrots, potatoes, or celery (this is essential)
- Sift bedding when bedding appears ‘sandy’
- Large worms kept at room temperature will pupate very soon!
- Never let worms sit in direct sunlight or in temperatures 85° or higher
Storing in the refrigerator (recommended)
- Remove vegetation while worms are refrigerated
- Don't store in the coldest areas where the milk is kept or the crisper; it can get a bit too chilly here!
- Always let worms stand at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before placing into the refrigerator at 45-50 degrees.
- At this temperature, the worms become dormant and last for months
- Worms must stay dry and have air at all times (do not place in a covered or sealed container)
- When removed from refrigeration offer moisture and food, worms will be lively and hungry as they warm up
Waxworms
- Waxworms will last one to two weeks at room temperature.
- They can be kept cool at 60 degrees, where they become dormant and will last up to 8 weeks.
- They are ideally kept in a wine cooler, butter tray in the refrigerator, or in a cellar. They must be stored in low humidity.
- If the bedding feels moist when they arrive, leave the lids off to let them dry out.
- Daily remove any dead worms (they will be black) and remove the cocoons of any that are spinning one.
Superworms
- Place them into a container that is shallow (a Tupperware bin or kitten litter pan work well) with some bran or oats for food.
- Keep them at warm room temperatures (75° to 90°) any colder than 55° is lethal to Superworms.
- Add a few slices of potato for food and water to keep them alive. The worms will not pupate as long as you keep them with many other larvae.
